Interesting talk between Madden and Yohe yesterday when they were talking about Josh's column. Yohe said he's talked to Rick Tocchet and Tocchet noted that Gally always tends to move towards the center of the ice as a winger which Malkin & Crosby both hate. So I feel it was quite clear that neither would have had any interest in him as a linemate. Madden then asked if he could be the 3C which Yohe said that wouldnt work because they want McCann as the 3C.... so you acquire a player that neither of your superstars will want to play with, and he cannot have the only other role he could reasonably succeed in... so why did we acquire him?
Quite clear that Rutherford wanted to dump him and Arizona was the only team calling. I think this Joseph kid can still pan out. He just needs to fill out first. I remember when we made the trade with Staal and we got this throw in piece named Brian Dumoulin... he's been the only piece that worked out for Pittsburgh. |

{Galchenyuk} f he plays like he has so far he isn’t helping the team make up for the 82 points in 82 games the Penguins lost. - Ryan Wilspun
While this conclusion is a little simple (Phil also cost us a lot points the opponents scored), i hated the trade the time i saw it... shame Sully/Malkin couldn't sort it out with him like grown men; he could be still nearly(!) a Hall (indeed Phil was a legit ConnSmyth contender not too long ago) with still two years left at a reasonable hit, and all that for a contract-year washgally and a prospect (we got for him). |

When did Garth start coming up with these horrible titles? |

A couple things...
This blog is ignoring cap ramifications. Phil's time was obviously up here but saving ~$2M on the cap has a lot of value. We may have had to trade Rusty or someone just to stay cap compliant.
Also, if youre going to illustrate shooting percentage as a way to show Phil will be back to his old goal scoring self soon.... why not at least compare that with Galchenyuks?
To me it sounds like "Phil is sucking...but Phil has a reason...Galchenyuk is just sucking.... I love Phil!" |

So RW's agrument is that they shouldn't have traded Kessel but they still should've traded Kessel because he's regressing? |

Loved GMJRs comments about Galchenyuk. Tells it like it is, no sugar coating. Unless he suddenly starts to score, his future with the Pens is limited to bottom 6 action. If the team ever gets healthy, he’ll probably be traded. |

I don’t get why Rutherford would go out of his way to say stuff like that about Galchenyuk. He could have just as easily said “We’ll have a lot of options when we’re all healthy and it’s up to the coaching staff to find the right fit.” Sending a message like this to a player should be done man to man behind closed doors, not via the (frank)ing beat. |

I’m typically an RW defender, but this column is downright incoherent.
I love Phil but he’s been bad in Arizona. While I’m not pleased with the return, moving on probably was the right move (as much as I hate to admit it). |

I think taking Galchenyuk was just a gamble for a reclamation project. A guy who was supposed to have a high ceiling and who might just start hitting it if he was given some competent centers. Can't think of a better opportunity than playing with Crosby or Malkin. Didn't pan out though I suppose, at least the pens aren't stuck with his contract so I really don't think it's that big of a deal. |

I agree. If you are planning on trading him, which I assume the Pens are, why would you devalue him publically like that? |

GMJR is old school... tell it like it is.
Galch needs more time is all... the season is still relatively young.
I'm really happy with the season so far, considering all the injuries. MM is my only worry at this point, and he has shown the ability to bounce back. The energy is there, and it appears even 71 and 58 are buying into the system this year. Letang said as much before the Blues game.

I don’t even disagree with the message. Galch is one of two guys I’d lean towards scratching when healthy and the coaching staff/management should be sending him messages and letting him know where he stands. I just don’t see the point of dragging a guy in the media. All that does is lower the trade value of a guy that probably doesn’t have much to begin with because now every GM knows that he’s about to get scratched. |

I actually feel pretty good about the trade. Completely short sighted to look at it as just Kessel for Gally and PO... need to consider they might have lost Rust in the process and the way he is playing I'd trade him for Kessel straight up.
Someone else mentioned Joseph being the equivalent of Dumo and I think that is spot on. Give him another year to develop and I think you've got another long term top 4 D. |

GMJR is a "hockey guy" which means he's bad at hockeying today's players. |

I hope Galchenyuk figures it out but hey, if we have enough guys playing great that it forces him out of the lineup that's fantastic.
He might not return a high pick but he still has trade value to some of these teams that are looking for talent next season.
Worst case, that is $5M the Pens have to spend in the offseason. |

While I believe today's players are faster, stronger more talented than yesterday's players, I think they are also much softer. |

Also should note the Pens played their hand with Murray perfectly. They loaded him up with work to see what he could deliver as a workhorse #1.
As I expected, he hasn't passed the test meaning he is going to command a much more reasonable next contract. Also, now seeing Jarry shine the Pens could be in beautiful shape in net for years to come. |

Yeah, I’m a bit confused by the strategy here, but also wouldn’t say Geno was an untouchable player this past offseason. |

The team has a very strong work ethic once again most games this season that was absent most games last season...would they of with Phil?
I dont know the answer to that question for sure but can't help but feel they wouldnt be as hard to play against. I might take heat for saying that but I dont care. Bring it on haha. |
